Update on the EUSD Farm Lab

Posted on: January 31st, 2018

Encinitas Union School District (EUSD) Farm Lab is honored to be growing roots on historic Encinitas land. This year, 5,400 EUSD students are visiting the DREAMS Campus for exciting, in-depth, one, three, or five-day hands-on educational units that bring Next Generation Science Standards to life. The small production farm is already providing 200-300 heads of Romaine lettuce and 200 pounds of delicious fresh carrots (or other seasonal crops) to the school lunch program – every week! Encinitas is the perfect home for this pioneering educational space, and the first organically certified district-owned farm in the country, growing healthy food for its school lunch program.

EUSD Farm Lab is an environmental education campus, and appropriate partnerships are essential for demonstrating a shared conviction of making planet-friendly decisions. Our strong partnership with the Magdalena Ecke YMCA makes it possible for all EUSD students to start their day traveling to Farm Lab by bus rather than arriving in individual cars, keeping the neighborhood air quality high, while traffic, street noises, and emissions are kept low. Farm Lab is also delighted to host the YMCA’s after school program, filling the space with the joyful sounds of additional engaging activities, and lessons.

On the horizon:

EUSD is thrilled to be partnering with a nonprofit organization that will support the district’s vision for providing world class educational opportunities for students and the greater community. Through this collaborative effort, you will see more site beautification and improvements that include innovative educational spaces, and field work that will begin to bring this site to its fullest potential.
