Posted on: November 21st, 2019

Are you ready for a major disaster? The answer for most people is no. The vast majority of Americans are woefully ill-prepared. However, there are many resources to take advantage of to help you, your family and neighbors get prepared.

Most residents of Encinitas probably do not understand that there are five major perils that could create disasters in Encinitas:

  1. Earthquakes
  2. Wildfires
  3. Floods
  4. Dam failures
  5. Coastal bluff failures

Learn more about the specific perils for the city of Encinitas and suggested emergency preparedness plans that you can implement on the city website:

In addition, the following are great online resources to leverage:

  1. ReadySanDiego

There is a great mobile app that San Diego County has set up to help residents in preparing for and dealing with a disaster. You can sign up through this app to get text alerts on your mobile devices about major events and disasters in the county.

FEMA also has a great mobile app that you can download to help with disaster preparedness that can be accessed from their website or through various app stores.

Also, FEMA provides an extensive in-depth guide to citizen preparedness:

If anyone is interested Home Depot has an entire section of their store devoted to disaster preparedness at very reasonable prices. Go check it out! You can also buy emergency preparedness kits and materials through the Red Cross on their website.

The community can arrange for the local Encinitas Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to present on this topic at an upcoming meeting. If homeowners are interested and there is a critical mass of attendees the community will arrange for a presentation.
