Paseo de las Verdes – Canary Palm Trees

Posted on: November 11th, 2024

Several weeks ago the city notified us that two of the three large canary palms at the entrance to our community on Paseo de las Verdes are infested with the palm weevil. These three trees are owned and maintained by the city.

At least two of the three will die. We explored treating them ourselves and taking over maintenance responsibility. However, it would have been an extremely costly approach. We would have needed to pay for the treatments and then for tree removal and replacement assuming they died. The removals alone were estimated at around $5000 per tree.
The palm weevil as mentioned in a recent newsletter article recently is wreaking havoc on canary palms all across southern California. The city has chosen to do nothing to treat any of these trees but just let them die. We have already lost two of these trees at the Quail Ridge entry earlier this year.
So, the city will be removing these trees and replacing them at their own expense. They are asking for suggestions on replacements but they will not be replacing them with the same species. We will update owners on the tree replacement plan.
