One of the top priorities for our landscaping strategy is to maintain very attractive and well kept entries into all developments within the community. A major source of irritation to achieve that priority in the past two years has been the inability to address serious deficiencies with the landscaping in the center island of Paseo de las Verdes near the intersection with Quail Gardens Drive.
The city owns and maintains the street and all of the parkway landscaping along Paseo de las Flores and Paseo de las Verdes. The community works very closely with the city Parks and Recreation department to help with maintenance and landscaping enhancements. However, we were not able to direct the city to replant this center island on Paseo de las Verdes after the loss of three large canary palms which were infested with palm weevil in 2024. The city replanted the island with three small African tulip trees which are very small and not well suited for a street with a high volume of traffic.
In the past year the board working with the city reached a formal agreement to take over maintenance responsibilities for this center island. This will allow us to remove and replant the African tulip trees elsewhere in the community and replace them with three large date palms (dactylifera) achieve a consistent look with Paseo de las Flores and other entries.
Below is a photo of the current state of the island. We expect this project to be completed in the next several months.
