City Council to hear recommendations for traffic mitigation on Quail Gardens Drive – Wednesday, September 13th

Posted on: August 20th, 2023

The city council plan to hear recommendations for improving safety and traffic conditions on Quail Gardens Drive and Saxony Road on Wednesday, September 13th. The council meeting will be held starting at 6 PM at city hall at 505 Vulcan Avenue in downtown Encinitas.

If for some reason this agenda item is moved to another date we will notify everyone. The date has been moved several times already.

If you are at all concerned about the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles on this road corridor it is vitally important that you get involved now!

The council reacts positively to residents appearing in person and numbers make a big difference. You can either speak or submit a speaker’s slip endorsing the recommendations. Alternatively, you can send an email or letter to the city council members at their email addresses below:

Below is a sample letter that you can send to the city council on these concerns:

Subject: Traffic Safety on Quail Gardens Drive and Saxony Road

Dear Council Member,

I am writing to you regarding concerns on the part of myself and my neighborhood about safety on Quail Gardens Drive and Saxony Road. This road corridor has become much more unsafe in the past few years and will become even more so with the impending housing developments.

There will be approximately 1300 housing units added to a one mile stretch of Quail Gardens Drive as part of the 2018 Housing Element. These developments represent 40% of the entire plan and is extremely  disproportionate if viewed across the entire city. It is also in direct conflict with the California Housing and Community Development (HCD) guidelines. Quail Gardens Drive is considered a local collector road with very narrow vehicle and bike lanes and was not designed with the current traffic volume or e-bikes in mind.

We strongly endorse the plans developed by the city traffic engineer to help mitigate concerns over safety as well as traffic volumes and speeds. Residents who live along Quail Gardens Drive have only one means for ingress and egress to their homes and that is this one road.

We urge the council to approve and help implement the recommendations of the traffic engineer as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
