Given the impending rain we will be receiving this winter, this article is a reminder about the irrigation system drain lines for your house.
Every house should have several drain lines that run from the side, back and front yards out to the street through the curb. These drain lines should have been installed by the original owner of the house and it the responsibility of the homeowner to maintain that drainage system.
Over time the drain lines can become clogged with tree roots or get crushed and this can create serious problems particularly in heavy rains. This could cause significant damage to your landscaping and the foundation of your house.
All homeowners should seriously consider regular maintenance on their irrigation drain lines that lead to the streets and gutters. The Landscaping Committee recommends that the drain lines be cleared of debris including tree roots at least one a year.
The Landscaping Committee has also noticed a number of homes where water is leaking into the gutter of the streets from these drain lines during non-rainy days. It is easy to spot a problem when a trail of water is found running down the street during the summer or fall when there is no rain. There are two potential causes. The first is overwatering in the front, side or back yards. The second cause is related to a water leak perhaps from a water feature like a fountain.
It is recommended that homeowners hire a company with the proper equipment to inspect and clean out the drain lines as well as check for leaks.
