Two new date palm trees were installed on February 4th in the center island on Paseo de las Flores near the entry monument. These two trees are replacing a canary palm tree that died as a result of a fungus and the palm weevil. As mentioned previously, the palm weevil has decimated canary palm trees across all of southern California and it is nearly impossible to stop their infestation. The old palm tree was removed in mid-January. This new species of palm tree, the phoenix dactylifera, is used throughout the community at other entrances like Devonshire, Quail Hollow and Quail Ridge and has proven to be very hardy, easy to maintain and resistant to pests like the palm weevil.
Below is a photo of the trees being installed.

As a reminder the city is responsible to maintain the parkways on Paseo de las Flores up to the entry monument as well as the parkways and center island on Paseo de las Verdes. There were three very large canary palm trees planted in the center island on Paseo de las Verdes near the intersection with Quail Gardens Drive. Unfortunately, they were also lost to the palm weevil last year. The city removed those dead trees and replaced them with several small african tulip trees. There are discussions underway with the city to see what other options could be considered in an effort to improve the look of that center island.
