Landscape Improvements Update

2017 has been a busy year so far for Encinitas Ranch Landscaping.  Phased work has begun on upgrading landscaped areas that are currently receiving recycled water. Tired and spent material has been removed, while any material that will still perform well remained in place.  We incorporated more water-wise plant material that will provide water savings while also improving aesthetic value.

Recent enhancements were completed on Paseo De Las Verdes slope and Ravean Entrance.  We are currently upgrading planters along the Paseo De Las Verdes/Samuel parkway and will be completed by Mid-July.

Horticultural Minute About A Newly Discovered Palm Pest

Horticulturists throughout Southern California have growing concerns for an invasive palm pest known as the South American Palm Weevil.  These weevils are known for attacking palms in Mexico, Central and South America.  Unfortunately, this Weevil has been discovered in Southern San Diego and is spreading quickly and aggressively.  Signs of these beetles include “chewed” or cut off leaf tips as shown in the photo on the left.  Additional signs are cocoon casings that can be found underneath an infested palm containing larva.  Currently the most susceptible and targeted hosts are Canary Island Date Palms.  However, Dactylifera Date Palms, California Fan Palms and Mexican Fan Palms could also be potential targets.  Although there are no sightings currently in North County San Diego, be sure to keep a closer eye on your residential palm collections for the next few years and copy the link below if you are interested in learning more about this issue along with preventative recommendations. https://cisr.ucr.edu/pdf/south_american_palm_weevil_hodel.pdf

If you see this pest, please report it through the UCR Invasive pest website: www.cisr.ucr.edu
