As we approach local and state elections it is important to understand where and how homeowners can place political signs.

California Civil Code Section 4710 protects an owner’s right to display political and other noncommercial signage on their own separate interest, such as within their windows or yard. However, this protection does not extend to Association common area. The wrought iron fencing at the rear of your property is common area owned and maintained by the Association, and Association Rules governing the use and appearance of common area therefore apply.

Accordingly, if you place a political sign on the perimeter common area fencing you will be asked to remove it. Please note that this request relates solely to the location of the sign on Association common area; you are welcome to display political signage that complies with Civil Code Section 4710 within the boundaries of your own separate interest.
